Going International

I’M HEADING TO KENYA AND SOME OF THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES THIS FALL. WILL YOU CONSIDER TAKING THIS JOURNEY WITH ME?
WHO:
I will be traveling with Community Life International Mission Association (CLIMA) and four other women that serve as medical professionals from various regions around the U.S.  The team of women is composed of 1 doctor, 2 nurses, and 1 exercise physiologist (ME).  We daily serve with our communities and churches and now have been given the opportunity to serve with international communities.
WHAT:
The main objective of this visit will be to assist CLIMA in providing preventative healthcare education and resources to women and young girls. These areas were chosen because female genocide is a continued practice and the death rate of children is high due to Malaria. The hope is to introduce non-traditional health care practices for healthy living that include; exercise & fitness, acupuncture, medication, as well as provide clean water resources. The team is also prepared to function as missionaries in other capacities as needed. I’m praying in advance for the work we will perform in these communities.
WHEN:
We will depart the U.S. on September 3, 2013 and return September 13, 2013. We will spend 2-3 days in Salama, Eldoret, and Kenya serving in their medical clinics.

The team and I are involved in fundraising efforts to earn money. However, I am seeking sponsors to support some of the expenses as well as medical/ministry supplies. Any amount that you might be able to give would be greatly appreciated. If you cannot help in a financial way, please support me with your prayers. I will make frequent updates of our activities via this blog site, Facebook, and Twitter.

I ask that you take a week to consider and pray about my request. If you are willing to become a sponsor just simply email me with a reply of YES. I will send further instructions on how and where to send your support payment.

Take this journey with me

Bored? SearCHing 4 nEwNess

MARCH is that time when all the new workout ventures taken on at the start of the year are dwindling to NOT.  Most people quit their exercise training programs after only a few months of participation as a result of boredom or delay in expected results.  I’m convinced, if you have pushed yourself to be active this far (3 months) you are serious about your level of fitness and serious about causing change. MaRch is a month in the year, but also an active state to proceed or advance BY a rhythmic stride to a specific place. Sooooo before you LET BOREDOM KEEP YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR FITNESS GOALS … try something different. Look to add an exercise training program that will stir excitement, and bring the fun back into your workouts.

Beach Body offers a variety of home fitness programs that could meet all of your fitness needs. There’s a program for you if you are looking to target and tone specific muscle groups or seeking to be challenged and pushed to higher fitness levels. These programs allow you the option to workout alone (just you and your DVD/Blueray player) or bring your spouse, friends, and older children along.  I admit I enjoy my solo workouts, but it’s just something about exercising with my husband that causes me to jump higher, push harder, and run faster.  This fitness thing is a lifetime journey and from time to time you need someone to travel with you.

Below are links to some of beach-body’s home fitness based workouts. Keep in mind that many of the workouts are advanced (NOT recommended for beginners) and designed to improve fitness in specific areas of fitness. Therefore, take care to choose fitness programs that will bring you closer to achieving your fitness goals, while minimizing the frustrations that arise from not witnessing an expected outcome.

I completed their P90X home based video series a few winters ago. Home based programs like these provides a spark to those workouts that have become boring. These programs can also remind us how effective older exercises that you may have eliminated from your workout can be. If you are bored with your workout and want a challenge, change, or an added push go to www.beachbody.com they just may have what your looking for to move you forward.

ChAnginG UR CuLture

We all set out to make a difference in the world, but the first step is to achieve the less lofty goal of changing your own world. - T.D. Jakes

The past year brought some great innovative ideas for living well.

  • The white house initiated healthier food choices for school lunch programs.
  • The First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on children's television promoting her Lets Move campaign.
  • The state of Iowa and others promoted  state wide initiatives targeting obesity.
  • The NBA and NFL promoted their FIT and 60 programs in cities across the country.
Have you heard about any of these programs? Are you and your family participating in any of them? These programs have been effective in getting some communities to recognize the rising obesity rates and need for physical activity, but rarely do programs like these reach us on a personal level. If we truly want to witness change in our communities or be apart of the change happening in those around us, the issues have to become personal to us. We must be willing to identify the need in our families, our children, and our home. We have to be unafraid to challenge and change the unhealthy culture WE HELPED CREATE in our homes.

As parents we are responsible for setting the tone in our homes and for the most part we have created a monstrous sound.  Melodies would be more harmonious if we had given them an apple instead of cookies or assisting them in a game of jump rope instead of watching cartoons. Initiating healthy habits are easier to implement when children are younger. They become a little more challenging when you are trying to figure them out for yourself and others.  Some of us on the other hand started off heading in the right direction, but somewhere along the lines things got off track. Chips became the favorite after school snack while fruit is rarely consumed. There is only thing you can do if this is the case and that's change the culture of your home.

Initiating a healthy change is not easy because it requires more of that thing we have so little of  - TIME.  It takes time to alter or redirect behaviors especially your own, but think of it this way 'this change is necessary for the health of my family and the well-being of our home'. Be sure to use your time wisely by preparing a plan of action that includes a time to create, prepare, gather, and implement. I have listed some tips below that can start you thinking about small simple changes.

Create – make a creative plan or competition for the family. Something inviting, helpful, and fun that will promote exercise, fitness, and nutritious eating.  For example you could try keeping a diagram of who consumes the most fruit and vegetable servings per week.  Hang the diagram on the refrigerator. It is sure to serve as a reminder when reaching for snacks.  Taking time to be creative may take a little time but the benefits are amazing.
For all healthy eating information go to www.myplate.gov be sure to print off a plate to hang on your refrigerator – visual reminders are the best.

Prepare – Know in advance what you want the outcome to be. You don’t want to take the time being creative only to have the healthy activity end in frustration because is not producing the results you want.  Your activity should lead up to your end goal. If my goal is to become more physically active throughout the day then I should consider standing while performing my work instead of sitting at my desk all day. Maybe I could exercise between the commercial breaks of my favorite TV program (definitely might eliminate the sudden refrigerator raid).  If you need some exercise ideas take a look at these previous posts:

Gather – Gather everyone you need and make sure they are on board. Getting others involved on most occasions will be easy especially if they are your children. Our children are motivated to do almost anything with us. My children enjoy the moments I turn the music up loud and dance. It only takes them a few seconds to join in. However, I do have one child at that pre-teen age that sometimes (well most of the time) needs just a little bit of prompting, prodding, and even some pushing to join in.  It’s good to transfer the concept of 'togetherness' or 'living healthy together' to our children. I believe it makes it easier to invite others on their wellness journey as adults.  However, if you decide on going solo let someone know your plans. It’s good to have support and accountability.

Implement – “Just Do It”- NIKE.  Do it today and tomorrow and the day after that.  If you miss a day do it the following day. If you miss a few days you have not failed.  If you decide to take a break or cut it short just go longer the next day. If you made the least healthful choices yesterday, just know you get a re-do today to perfect your culture. Keep at it!

“You’ve never failed until you’ve tried for the last time, and you’ve never lost until you quit”
-S. Massie.

Let 2013 become the year you take on a new innovative idea that will change the culture of your home.

Celebrations and Feasts

Has anyone read ‘The Blue Zones’ by Dan Buettner? It provides a glimpse into the lives of people, cultures, and communities that live the longest. One of the chapters reviewed a culture from the Japanese Island of Okinawa where its people lived long healthy lives and experienced little disease. The Okinawa people contributed their health and longevity to the phrase – “I Kigai and Moai”.  Kigai means that which make one’s life worth living and Moai means one has a special support network.

Have you ever experienced 'life worth living' moments? Like the Okinawa people I find I experience them most when surrounded by family and friends celebrating, feasting, and enjoying the blessings of life together. I was reminded just how much I enjoy these types of gatherings this summer as I celebrated the July 4th Holiday with my extended family. Each moment allowed me to reunite with loved ones, meet new additions (cousins), and share laughs about situations that were once worth crying about.  For me these are the moments that make living exciting.

I come from a very large family, and as a young girl I enjoyed more than anything our holiday gatherings. They were an escape from the norms of everyday living. Try to hear me out on this one - normal was good, but more was better. More people, more laughs, more hugs, more encouragement, and oh my goodness more food (take a look at    pics). Not just any ole food either. These feast provided the best of both worlds - the best recipes from everyone’s kitchen, plus the love, support, and brute honesty that only come from family. Large family celebrations only came around a few times a year, but they were and are the moments that makes life worth living.

Celebrations provide an excuse to over-indulge - eat so much you have to unbuckle your belt or put on stretchy pants :) hahaha. We all know how easy it is to overeat and many of us do it while hoping our bodies do not respond (weight gain) to what we have done.  A celebration/feast is a special occasion and it demands we APPROACH EATING FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. What do I mean? During celebrations we may eat foods that don't necessarily provide the body with essential nutrients, but taste good.  The occasion should allow us a certain freedom apart from that of normal eating. In the “Proper Eating” post (www.bwela.blogspot.com/2012/06/normal-eating.html)
I discuss the importance of recognizing the various times and occasions for eating.  We only need to be careful to not allow celebration habits turn into everyday behaviors.

Do you ever find yourself abusing the freedom to indulge by doing it everyday?
What about using any and every occasion as an opportunity to over eat?

It is estimated that over the course of 6 years the average person will consume about 70,000 meals. That's a lot of eating!  Now imagine you decide 68,000 of those meals would be normal and 2000 of those meals are reserved for feast and celebrations. A decision like this would eliminate much of the worry we place on ourselves about the food we eat and the amount of weight gain associated with over eating.

As I celebrate my Thanksgiving Holiday I will enjoy the moments spent with family and friends over a big festive meal. I will take pleasure in what I eat, but more than that I will give thanks and show my appreciation for those I share my holiday meal. Enjoy your moments of  "I Kigai and Moai" - moments that make life worth living.

Giving Thanks for you (your LIFE, your health, and your Well-Being)
Happy Thanksgiving

Zuuuuumbaaaaaa

There are many ways to improve your fitness. Why not do something that you enjoy while giving you the results you are looking for.  Live N Life Well and friends have invited members from our local community to join us as we dance our way to fitness.  This is fitness the Latin way - It's the sway your hips and clap your hands as you feel the rhythm in the movement of the dance. Yes my friend, we have entered into the land of ZUMBA mania. Zumba is a Latin based dance fitness program that has surged in popularity as people witness improvements in their fitness levels and weight loss. An article written by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) described this fitness craze as more like a wild party scene than a strict exercise regiment. You can read more  of the article titled 'Zumba brings the dance party to the health clubs' at http://usat.ly/sRgSHW.

In this post I would like to introduce you to Maria Romero instructor of our current 6 week Zumba program. Maria and I attend the Body of Christ Church together and we came together to provide a pre-winter fitness program to get people in the fitness mindset before the big snow arrives.  We invited the local community to join us on Tuesday evenings for free classes. Yep, you heard me right FREE. At a time when fitness centers are charging extra fees to participate in Zumba, we decided to offer it free. Live N Life Well also offered health based fitness assessments that included body composition, flexibility, and muscular endurance. Why for free you ask? We desire to see people Living Life Completely Well! PERIOD

One last thing, if you like to dance or want to add a little something different to your workout…. ZUMBA just may be the change you have been looking for.

Well here she is and I am super excited to introduce Maria Romero – Certified Zumba Instructor.

Birthday give away Winner

My Birthday was a Blast! I just wrapped up the final phases of my celebrations this weekend August 25th :).  I think I have added more and more days to this holiday (my own declared holiday) with every passing year. I'm sure you are wondering what I did Right?

The day began with a bang! So naturally I was thankful to an (my) Amazing God for blessing me with another year of renewed freshness, vitality, and for positioning me in a state of well-being where I can flourish. I then spent the earlier part of my day in teacher seminars, training for the 2012 school year. But after that it was on!  I surrounded myself with those I love most for the remainder of the day. We celebrated over dinner and dessert but couldn't stop there, after all what kind of birthday would it have been without a little dancing. We broke out "Dance Revolution" the hottest dance party around (giggle). While I danced on the pad my children danced next to me, with my youngest son landing a few front flips at the age of five. It was some wild partying going on over here. A couple of days later I was able to travel to the Iowa State fair for the first time. While there I saw Boy's To Men in concert, the infamous butter cow, and taste some fun foods (save that for another post).  I wrapped up the festivities by taking part in the Women of Faith conference with musical guest Cece Winans :).
 I love celebrating my birthday.

OK so to get to the good stuff, the winner of the birthday give away is (drum roll please):

Food Serving A Purpose

Food talks are everywhere. Turn on the news, radio, or any talk show and the discussions are about the best foods to eat or remove from your diet this summer. The main topic in majority of these discussions surround how to improve your health, making changes in body image, or both. The stories are of popular entertainers, vegans, religious practices that monitor food intake, the flat belly diet, the slim calm sexy diet and so much more. Despite the fact that our eating behaviors may vary from individual to individual, with some emphasizing a sensitivity to animal products or food allergies. In all honesty weight loss is numero uno for the majority of folks .

If weight loss is the goal, before plunging into your next eating venture ask yourself this question, would this change require me to eliminate an entire food group from my diet?

Eating is very important to carry out even the simplest functions in our body. Yet some of the greatest myths involving weight loss surround the foods we eat. One of the myths I often encounter surround weight loss and food elimination.  Removing certain food groups such as“Bad Carbohydrates” from our diets, because they make us gain weight. The second myth communicates the less we eat, the greater the amount of  weight we lose. These myths may not be true for everyone, but if you find areas that you most identify with, draw from the trues mentioned.  We will spend this blog post highlighting the first myth.

Take notice of the level of commitment and discipline when someone convinces themselves that weight loss happens faster if you stop eating bread, dairy products, or meat. Follow me here for a moment because this is true to an extent.  Anytime you remove foods that you frequently eat from your diet, weight loss of some sort will occur. I believe it goes deeper than this, what really happens is we look at where we are and determine that we are overweight and out of shape, so what we are currently doing must not be good enough. Therefore committing to a new diet plan becomes easy, not because it is the right thing for us, but because we are hungry for change.  We need to do something different, something new. Now all it takes is one persons story, a few pounds lost, and we are sold. We become passionate about a task without proof, allowing thoughts of a "slimmer and fitter you" serve as a driving force. Then like the weight watchers commercials of Jennifer Hudson, you too want to sing and tell everyone about  this new thing. This is not a knock against weight watchers because I believe they offer a program that assist people in identifying the freedoms associated with food and eating. I'm saying we speak highly of diets that we are only beginning, while persuading others to get on board with the changes we expecting to experience.

Do you find that you identify more with the concept of food elimination (I will not eat _____ anymore; I stopped eating ________) as a method of changing your eating behaviors?

Something to think about: If a healthy (without disease) person were to ask a medical professional whether they should give up something like carbohydrates for weight lose. About 99% of the time you would be encouraged to not eliminate any food groups because each are  necessary components for healthy living. If necessary, they will have you replace foods within a food group with other foods. For example if pastas cause you to bloat instead of removing all grains from your diet, they may suggestion you replace pasta with brown rice or oats. Or become more attentive to reorganizing your eating and eating behaviors (how often you eat or how much you are eating). In most cases they would not condone eliminating an entire food group unless it was causing some sort of medical malfunction within your body.

I have placed a chart below containing the 6 classes of Essential Nutrients the Body requires and the major food sources from those categories.
Proteins
Form important parts of muscle, bone, blood, enzymes, some hormones, and cell membrane, tissue repair, water regulation, acid-base balance, help in growth, energy supply.
Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, milk products, legumes, nuts
Carbohydrates
Supply energy to cells in brain, nervous system, and blood, and muscles during exercise
Grains (bread, and cereals), fruits and vegetables, milk
Fats
Supply energy, insulate, support and cushion organs, absorb fat soluble vitamins
Animal foods, grains, nuts, seed, fish, and vegetables
Vitamins
Promote chemical reactions within cells
Abundant in fruits and vegetables and grains, also found in meat and dairy products.
Minerals
Help regulate body function, aid in growth and maintenance of body tissues, act as a catalyst to release energy.
Found in most food groups
Water
Makes up 50-60% of body weight, assist in chemical reactions, regulate body temperature, remove waste products.
Fruits, vegetables, liquids

Have you been tempted to deny your body any of the food groups? If so, did you consider the effect the changes would have on the internal functions of your body?

Take the time to discover what works best in getting your body to function at it’s highest potential. Each of our bodies respond differently to certain foods and those things that energize one person may cause another to feel sluggish. Some foods will cause one to feel bloated and others to feel light. Some may increase factors that lead to weight gain and others weight loss. The important thing is when we recognize these things, we must not take it to be permission to remove an entire food group from our diet, but as permission to experience foods outside of our "normal" that has the capabilities to promote wellness.

Prior to beginning your next weight loss adventure ask yourself this question, will it supply me the freedom to eat WELL

Normal Eating

Did you wake up this morning determined to get this eating thing right? Did you take some of your precious moment to plan what you would eat or did you just grab the first thing in sight? I think we give too much attention to the many scientifically proven ways to eat, when eating has been something we have been practicing since birth. Eating is fun and food gives us energy to carryout our daily activities. I don't know about you but I like to eat.  In the world of food experts I would probably be labeled a borderline foodie. Yes, I am one of those who take the time to read food labels and I enjoy watching the food network (Paula Deen and Chopped). But, following food fads or wasting tons of time with food preparation is not my thing.  I only cook because I like to eat :) .
Eating is one of our seven laws of health, meaning it's good for you and it's good to improve your well being. The difficult part for many of us is understanding the how's, when's, and why's of eating. I ran across this excerpt on 'Normal Eating' taken from Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family by Ellyn Satter that I thought you would enjoy. These simple points about normal eating challenged some of my long held views about eating. This was perfect timing considering nutrition was one of the listed topics of discussion on the blog survey, along with exercise and fitness.  Since we recently enjoyed 8 weeks of exercising during the commercial breaks of our favorite TV shows. Let's spend a few moments on Normal Eating. Keep in mind however that living well requires us to give attention to the whole body, mind, and spirit components. We only get one body and each area (including eating) must be full involved in order to complete us and complement what we were purposed to do. I pray these points will challenge your current view and free you from the eating habits that keep you from living a well life.

WHAT IS NORMAL EATING?

  • Normal eating is going to the table hungry and eating until you are satisfied. It is being able to choose food you like and truly get enough of it - not just stop eating because you think you should.
  • Normal eating is being able to give some thought to your food selection so you get nutritious food, but not being so wary and restrictive that you miss out on enjoyable food.
  • Normal eating is giving yourself permission to eat sometimes because you are happy, sad, or bored, or just because it feels good.
  • Normal eating is three meals a day, or four or five, or it can be choosing to munch along the way.
  •  It is leaving some cookies on the plate because you know you can have again tomorrow, or it is eating more now because it taste so wonderful.
  •  Normal eating is overeating at times, feeling stuffed and uncomfortable; It is also under eating at times and wishing you had more.
  •  Normal eating is trusting your body to make up for your mistakes in eating.
  •  Normal eating takes up some of your time and attention, but it keeps its place as only one important area of your life.

In short normal eating is flexible. It varies in response to your hunger, your schedule, your proximity to food and your feelings.
